Although covered in plastic from nose to tail, our latest spy shots give the best look yet at the 2010 BMW 7 Series. Caught during testing on the streets of Munich, the 2010 7 Series looks as though it will maintain a size similar to the current model while cleaning up some of its controversial styling. Expected to start production in 2009, the 2010 7 Series will ride on a new platform with an internal designation of F01.
There have been several names used to describe the 2010 BMW V Series, and none of them make much sense. The latest one getting thrown around the halls of BMW headquarters in Munich is "progressive activity sedan." Judging by the looks of the prototypes caught in our latest spy video, the new model could look as odd as its name.
BMW is recalling 55 MY 2008 X5 sport utility vehicles for problems with the rear axle stabilizer (anti-sway bar). These vehicles were equipped with a sports-suspension stabilizer rather than a standard suspension stabilizer on the rear axle. In certain driving conditions, such as fast lane changes at high speed, the vehicle could experience an 'over-steer' behavior affecting vehicle handling and control, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Caught testing on the streets of Munich, the X1 has a tall-roof design similar to the 2010 BMW V5 utility vehicle. The idea for both vehicles is to cram as much interior space as possible into a relatively small footprint. Essentially, this is as close as BMW is going to get to building minivans.
It looks awkward in pictures and some find it hideous, but the 2008 BMW X6 50i isn't nearly as warped when you see it in person. It's kind of a supermodel from behind, with a slim, narrow roof at the top and curvaceous hips at the bottom. Designers call this sort of thing tumblehome, and an SUV without it looks like a refrigerator.
The front is all BMW with a big twin kidney grille and fighter-jet-size intakes at each corner. The roof line goes on forever in profile, giving the X6 a hatchback-style look that's unique at best, a little too forced at worst. The designers at BMW say it's "coupelike," so they — and they alone — call the X6 a Sports Activity Coupe.
It gets better from behind the wheel. Fire up the new 400-horsepower, 4.4-liter V8 and it sounds more like a carbureted big block than a sophisticated twin-turbo engine with direct injection. We don't remember an X5 sounding this burly.
So far this much is clear — pictures don't do the all-wheel-drive 2008 BMW X6 justice.
We've already seen the 2010 BMW Z4 on the streets of Munich and on the Nürburgring, but now we've managed to snag some footage of the upcoming roadster during final cold-weather testing in the Arctic Circle. From low-speed testing on the city streets to higher-speed action on a frozen lake, the engineers at BMW are throwing everything they have at the next-generation 2010 BMW Z4.
Like previous prototypes of the 2010 BMW Z4 that we've seen, these cold-weather test mules appear to have a traditional soft top. Don't believe it, as we suspect it's nothing but clever camouflage designed to hide the fact that the 2010 BMW Z4 is switching to a folding hardtop.
Before you start sending us flaming e-mails complaining that a comparison between the 2008 Audi S5 and the 2008 BMW M3 Coupe is an obvious mismatch from the get-go, you should know a few things.
Our first full test of the $53,000, all-wheel-drive 2008 Audi S5 was a bit of a revelation. With a 354-horsepower version of Audi's direct-injection 4.2-liter V8 under its hood, the voluptuous Audi S5 ran a 13.3-second quarter-mile at 104 mph, just 0.1 second and 2 mph shy of the 420-hp 2007 Audi RS4 sedan. What's more, the S5's slalom speed is within a couple mph of the harsh-riding RS-spec sedan. "It ran a 13.3? With that kind of speed, who needs a $67,000 RS4?" we asked ourselves.
BMW's new Concept CS, a four-door, four-passenger luxury coupe believed to preview a model that will be produced soon, will be unveiled Friday at the Auto Shanghai show. The automaker says the concept's combination of luxury and sports car is a "unique combination never seen before" and emphasizes that with it, BMW is entering a segment where it has not been in the past.
Called a sports activity coupe, the X6 brings more than just a distinctive new profile to market. The vehicle also introduces an array of new technologies that will undoubtedly filter through the rest of the BMW lineup.
